International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia marked in Baku

International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia was marked by the only LGBT NGO in Azerbaijan - “Gender & Development”, at their local office in Baku. The event was attended by more than 50 representatives of other human rights related NGOs, in particular, by members of «Clean World» NGO and youth group «Dalga». LGBT activists distributed badges calling for the fight against homophobia and the spread of AIDS.

In addition to OL!, Dalga seem very interesting. Don't know much about them, but the story about the student leader of one of their regional branches being expelled from university was interesting.

Azerbaijan: Youth activist expelled from universityWhat's especially interesting about youth movements in Azerbaijan is that they are so far non-politicized yet get involved in matters such as democratization, but also environment, gender rights etc.

Here, these issues are dealt with by groups focusing on specific issues. There, the movements focus on virtually everything that can be considered part of "development."

Personally speaking, I favor that second approach. That is, specific NGOs focus on these issues, but youth movements will not restrict themselves to a narrow objective and support them.
